About Myanmar

Myanmar (Burma) is a kite-shaped country in Southeast Asia sharing borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, and Thailand, and its beautiful tropical beaches face the Bay of Bengal. It is also known as The Golden Land because of the myriad of pagodas covered in gold leaf, seemingly as numerous as the stars, and visitors will have warm memories of smiling people with thanaka painted yellow cheeks and generous hospitality from even the poorest people. It is rare for Myanmar to feature in international news, and when it does, it’s most likely because of the latest disaster. Since 1948, ethnic tensions, and political instability have made it difficult for the country to progress in the modern world and sadly, the hopes of generation after generation have turned to despair in the face of conflict and natural disasters such as cyclone Nargis, Covid and most lately devastating Earthquakes which have shaken homes and infrastructure to pieces. The country is broken.

Recent Earthquake

Last month, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook the country. With more than 12,000 casualties and over 500 still missing, it's the most devastating earthquake in the country's history. Many simply crumbled from people's feet. Worse is the complete collapse of all infrastructure: roads, electric lines, water pipes. The people who survived now face a dire lack of food, water, and shelter.
