Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Update! I did it! Thank you so much for your support! It was a wonderful day and despite the worry beforehand about all the logistics and the ‘what ifs’- I made it round in 7hr 17!
As some of you may already know I have been learning British Sign Language (BSL) alongside couples ( and a very patient teacher!) who are part of the Deaf community, albeit in different ways. One couple have a child who became deaf following a virus, and another couple ‘s child was born deaf. Their young children both now have cochlear implants and are also picking up BSL through watching and learning with their parents.
In our lessons I have also learned about the challenges faced by the Deaf community in a hearing world and have chosen to raise money for SignHealth, while taking on The Ford RideLondon-Essex 100. This starts on the Victoria Embankment, riding out to Essex and back into London, finishing on Tower Bridge, which completes the 100 mile journey.
This is a huge challenge for me as road cycling this distance is new to me! I am enjoying the training - although the hills can be a struggle. I would like to raise awareness for this charity and showcase the vast assistance with mental and physical health they provide for both adults and young people. Their vision is “a world without barriers to good health and wellbeing for Deaf people.” This includes providing support for domestic abuse sufferers, therapy, advocacy and residential services. Their work is varied and aims to promote easier access to healthcare and information. They partner with the NHS and other services and take on projects, carry out research, and raise awareness.
If you would like to donate and help motivate me on my training rides and help me to the finish line , please know you will be supporting a very worthwhile charity. I,along with them , will very much appreciate whatever support you can offer.
Thank you.
