Wild about Kit: The 12 hour swim

12 hour wild swim relay · 13 July 2025
On Sunday 13th July 2025, the Mums Go Wild Swimming Community are organising a 12 hour swimathon at Broadfields lake to raise money in honour of one of our member’s little boy, Kit, who devastatingly passed away aged just 14 months in September 2024.
Kit was a seemingly well 12 month old until he became unwell with vomiting and was admitted to hospital in July last year. He was found to be in acute liver failure and and transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. His liver recovered and he made it home after 3 weeks but he had become increasingly weak and his parents knew that something was terribly wrong. Three days after discharge, they were called into a meeting to be given the news that his genetics results had shown that Kit had POLG related mitochondrial disorder (Alper’s disease in his case). Given his age and presentation he was likely to deteriorate rapidly and they were referred to palliative care.
Kit passed away peacefully at home on 15th September 2024, just 2 months after he became unwell.
There is currently no cure or treatments for this terrible disease and we are raising much needed money for The Noah Jordan Foundation, a small charity set up in memory of another gorgeous little boy, Noah, who tragically passed away earlier in 2024, aged just 9 months after also being transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital in liver failure. The charity is raising much needed money to fund vital research and to support patients and families affected by POLG related mitochondrial disorder.
Please click on the ‘Remembering Kit’ link to read more about him and the charity we are supporting.
Any donations or support for this wonderful cause will be massively appreciated.
