Hi Everyone - it's been six months since I joined Legal Aid NC and I have learned so much about how our mission affects families and individuals living in poverty who need an attorney.

Civil legal aid involves many basic needs we all require to move forward in our lives: personal safety, employment, housing, fair treatment, and more.

The most stirring impacts for me are those around housing, such as seniors who are tricked into signing fraudulent contracts to sell their homes, families whose evictions are prevented, and people whose expunctions open up economic opportunity.

There is no constitutional right to an attorney for civil legal needs. That's why more than 96% of low wealth North Carolinians with legal needs have no representation. There are some barriers that require an attorney to remove.
