Alzheimer’s Heroes: A Mission of Strength and Resilience
Alzheimer’s Heroes was founded by George Sotiri (@georgetheosteo) to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK in memory of his father, Andrew, who passed away from Alzheimer’s. This degenerative brain disease currently has no cure and accounts for 12.5% of all deaths in the UK each year.
Determined to make a difference, George set a goal to run six marathons in six countries—four of which he has successfully completed. His journey has inspired many to join him, and in May 2025, my brother and I will take on the Tough Mudder challenge to support this worthy cause.
I met George Sotiri over five years ago after undergoing multiple knee surgeries due to serious injuries. Throughout my recovery, George played a crucial role—treating me before and after each surgery, helping to strengthen my knee, and improving my overall fitness.
Over the past year and a half, George has also been instrumental in rehabilitating my brother, Stefanos, who, at just 17, was diagnosed with Lymphoma. After spending nearly two months in a medically induced coma and six months in UCLH’s T12 Teenage Cancer Ward, he lost all muscle mass and had to relearn how to move, eat, talk, and walk—all while battling cancer and undergoing intense chemotherapy and radiation.
Once in remission, George took charge of his rehabilitation, guiding him from a wheelchair-bound state to training three times a week. I’ve watched my brother regain his strength, return to peak fitness, and once again play football and basketball while coaching tennis and football.
At the same time, I’ve witnessed George’s unwavering dedication—despite losing his father to Alzheimer’s, he continues to inspire, treating his patients while training and running four of the six marathons he set out to complete. Through Alzheimer’s Heroes, he tirelessly raises awareness and funds in pursuit of a cure for this devastating disease.
