Story
Myeloma Australia is the only Australian myeloma specific not-for-profit organisation. They support, educate, inform, empower and bring hope to people who are living with myeloma, and their loved ones. They also facilitate myeloma research in Australia; educate health professionals involved in the care and treatment of those living with myeloma; raise community awareness and understanding of myeloma; and advocate for improved patient access to the latest treatments at affordable prices.
Following the success of our first Nike Marathon Festival in 2023, we quickly jumped on board for the 2024 Nike Marathon Festival. The day was organised by one of our own, Lauren, with the help of her Mum, Annie. Annie supported all participants on the day ensuring no one was left without a post run sugar hit or a Gatorade. Following an epic couple of weeks post marathon, Annie was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma – having no history of illnesses or cancer, it came as a huge shock to Annie and her family.
Multiple Myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer that is formed in plasma cells in the bone marrow. Once the plasma abnormality (cancer cell) starts, it multiplies uncontrollably within the body. Each year 2,600 Australians are diagnosed with Myeloma. Many have never heard of the disease, hence why our Campaign ‘Miles for Myeloma’ is so important. We are striving to build a deeper understanding of Myeloma in our community.
SJD Company will be running in the Nike Melbourne Marathon on the 13th of October with distances ranging from 5km to 42km! All donations will go to Myeloma Australia. We are already training hard for the big day and can't wait! So far we have a big team of 35, consisting of employees and our family and friends.
We are also participating in Dry July this year, with over 25 staff members committed to giving up alcohol for the month of July in the efforts to raise money for Myeloma Australia.
