My first London Marathon: April 1993. Charity supported: Glaucoma UK.
My second London Marathon: April 2024. Charity supported: Glaucoma UK.
Then, never again!
Why am I supporting Glaucoma UK?
As an ophthalmic surgeon and young glaucoma specialist, Glaucoma UK sponsored my research into glaucoma in 1991-2. In gratitude for that support I raised funds in my first marathon. That, and my professional interest in glaucoma stimulated a life long interest in the charity.
In 2021 and 30 years later, I retired from my glaucoma clinical practice. Throughout, I have supported Glaucoma UK and during this time Glaucoma UK has made fantastic contributions to the world of glaucoma by funding research in UK and internationally in adult and paediatric glaucoma.
Glaucoma UK has remarkable diverse activities in their support for people with glaucoma. It provides a free helpline for concerned patients with glaucoma and offers information on the internet, it offers free information leaflets on multiple glaucoma subjects (diagnosis, medical/surgical treatment, eye drops and many more).
Glaucoma UK established and supports a Professor of Glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology (UCL). It funds the research of the professor and funds awards granted by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. The charity is making a difference. Through Mike's Marathon, please support the fund raising activities of the charity. You can make a difference.
What has been my involvement with Glaucoma UK?
In 1992 I was appointed as a Glaucoma Specialist Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital (the first specialist appointment of this type in the UK). With my interest in Glaucoma UK (at the time called the International Glaucoma Association) I was invited to join the Trustees. Subsequently I was elected Chairman of the Trustees from 2000 to 2010. From 2010 I left it to others to take over the reins but I look at Glaucoma UK now and the Trustees and management of that time can be proud of the foundations and building blocks that were laid for the charity during the early 2000s and which have allowed Glaucoma UK to develop and thrive.
But we survive on donations. Glaucoma UK needs your support. Please support me to support people with glaucoma.
