Story
In July 2023 I was told that I had prostate cancer. I didn't have any symptoms, just thought "I'm over 50 so i probably ought to get checked". Like many men i had put it off thinking that it was an 'invasive' check up, but in fact it was just a blood test.
It was the best decision i ever made. If i hadn't had that blood test, I wouldn't have known I had cancer and my story might be so much worse.
I've had my prostate removed and, bar a few complications, my recovery is going well. I get tested every 3 months, which is great, but also a regular reminder of having cancer. I guess that will last for the next 5 years of tests, maybe longer, who knows.
What I do know is that the information packs that Prostate Cancer UK give to help you understand your options, the different treatments, and also the support and post-op packs with things like incontinence pads in, are invaluable. The charity also has amazing people to help support and advise the 1 in 6 men who hear those horrible words "you have prostate cancer".
On June 2nd my wife and friends are joining the "March For Men" on a 5k walk around Battersea Park organised by Prostate Cancer UK raising public awareness and trying to get regular screening for men.
Please help me support their incredible work.
Thank you
Mike
