Story
Our 11 years daughter Isabelle was diagnosed with autism at the age of 8. As parents, we knew something was different about her, but we didn't know what it was. The educational and healthcare systems missed her symptoms, and getting a formal diagnosis was a long and tedious process. After a year of waiting, we had to seek a private assessment. But having the diagnosis was only the first step in our journey to understand how she senses, processes, and learns. We had little understanding of what support we could give her or what to expect from the school and healthcare system.
Connecting with the right individuals has been instrumental in helping her progress. That's why I'm proud to be part of Team Autism for the London Landmarks Half Marathon 2024, raising money for the National Autistic Society - UK's leading charity for people on the autism spectrum and their families since 1962. They provide support, guidance, advice, as well as campaigning for improved rights, services and opportunities to help create a society that works for autistic people.
I'm running this marathon because I believe in creating a world that is inclusive of everyone regardless of their abilities or disabilities. I'm inspired by my daughter's resilience and determination in managing the challenges of a world designed for neurotypical people.
