Story
Human rights are designed to be invisible. We don’t really think about the everyday freedoms we have; expressing our opinion, getting a book out the library, wearing whatever we please, or even just going for a walk.
But for many people around the world, these routine freedoms are continually threatened, and can mean violent persecution.
For people like Layla, rights and freedoms are something which must be fought for. As a documentary filmmaker from Iran, Layla wanted to raise awareness of women’s rights and conditions in Iranian prisons through her films. This open reporting led Layla to be imprisoned for three years in the very same prisons she reported on – cramped, dirty and overcrowded spaces.
Without the support of charities like Prisoners of Conscience (PoC), people like Layla might not be able to re-build their lives and continue fighting for their, and in turn our, human rights.
This is why I am raising money for Prisoners of Conscience this April, by taking part in its #RightsRealityCheck challenge!
I recognise that the freedom of movement is a human right not everyone is afforded (as we see on the news everyday), and so I'm committing to run 100km in April, and not take this simple, everyday human right for granted 🏃
I'm pretty unfit at the minute (!) so it won't be easy, but it'll be just a fraction of the plight and endurance people experience everyday, in having to flee persecution for upholding the most essential of our human rights.
Sponsor me if you can or, better still, choose your own challenge and commit to it throughout April✊Together we can raise vital funds for human rights defenders like Layla. Thank you!
