Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page.

Last year I was diagnosed with Endometrial cancer and was totally shocked, following surgery to remove it, to find out that I would have to undergo a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I’m a blasé sort of person and these things just don’t happen to me! Or so I thought.

In early June I walked into the Maggie’s centre at Nottingham City Hospital, following some pretty nasty chemotherapy side effects, not really knowing what I wanted to say or what I wanted to ask.

As soon as I walked through the door I was greeted by a lovely volunteer who made me a cup of coffee and offered me a biscuit. She then said, as it was my first time, she would ask one of their cancer support specialists to come and talk to me. She was amazing. She let me cry and rage against the unfairness of it all, she spoke to me about hair loss and showed me how to tie a head scarf and of course, we spoke about dogs! I realised that day that I had somewhere to go, somewhere with people who had the time to listen and to talk, away from the hospital setting.

Of course there is the fabulous kitchen where everyone congregates to have a drink and biscuits, or even cake! Staff, volunteers and patients come and go and everybody chats to everybody else.

My treatment has come to an end now but sadly Maggie’s has been a lifeline for my husband and I this year. In January my husband was told that his cancer has returned and that this time it is inoperable. We were devastated when we heard the news and I personally wondered if I would ever stop crying.

We have had several chats with the cancer support specialists there, both together and separately. We really feel cared for and know that there will always be someone there to talk to. This support is invaluable.

I would urge anyone who has been touched by cancer, either personally or through a family member, to go to Maggie’s, they really will look after you, and it is for this reason that I am asking you to sponsor me for this abseil on 23rd June. I know I have set an ambitious target, but I know, with your help, I can reach it and hopefully pass it.

Big or small, your donation will be very much appreciated. If you are unable to make a donation, you can help me by sharing my page as widely as possible on social media and amongst your friends and contacts.
