We fund research of secondary breast cancer to improve patients' quality of life

Story

On Saturday 16th September 2023, around 30 colleagues from McCann Health London and IPG Health UK will set off to climb Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. We will be raising funds for secondary breast cancer charity Make 2nds Count.

We were introduced to this wonderful charity and the invaluable work they do by our colleague, Emily, who was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in 2020. Emily had been asked to become a member of the charity’s patient forum and was also intending to climb Ben Nevis herself. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2022 before she was able to do either. We are honoured to climb in her memory.

Secondary breast cancer, also known as metastatic, advanced or stage IV breast cancer, is breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body. It can be treated but it cannot be cured. Treatments aim to control and slow down the growth and spread of the disease to enable patients to have the best possible quality of life for as long as possible.

It’s estimated that over 55,000 people are currently living with secondary breast cancer in the UK, yet only 5-9% of the national funding for breast cancer goes towards this incurable disease. Between 2018-2021, breast cancer was the leading cause of death for women aged 35 to 49 in England and Wales.
