Story
As many of you know, I and my son Rob, were planning on doing the Norfolk Super Hero Challenge in June 2023. Due to injuries this didn’t happen, but they generously held our place open for 2024 and WE HAVE STARTED TRAINING!
If you are not aware of the challenge, it is a charity quadrathlon, that is held in and around Burnham Overy, raising funds for Norfolk charities. Participants take part in teams of two and together cover a course that includes a 1-mile swim from Gun Hill to the Hard, a 4 mile kayak circuit through the creeks, a 45 mile circular cycle route and an 8 mile run, out to Holkham and back across the beach finishing with the last mile over the marsh.
Why on Earth would we want to do that?
Because the bodies at Super Hero headquarters spent the last few months of 2023 interviewing likely Norfolk charities to benefit from our fund raising and this year their main charity is the Burnham Overy Harbour Trust.
We will specifically be raising funds for the vital work involved in restoring the creek we all love so much. This will primarily involve the restoration of the groynes which are crucial in preventing the creek from silting up, as well as taking important measures to reduce erosion of the marshes, thereby protecting a huge habitat for our many endangered birds, plants, and other wildlife.
Also because I live here, and I love the creek in all its wildness, I see it all year round, with and without its cloak of visitors, and The BOHT need these crucial funds to do their all-important restoration work before it’s too late.
On a personal level I also want to prove to myself that I can achieve this epic task. I have never done anything like this before, I like swimming, I like kayaking, I like bike riding, I detest running and am rubbish at it. Watching some of the previous competitors coming in from that last run, they look like they shouldn’t be able to do it, they looked like normal, mostly sane, humans.
I just want to one day be able to look back and say that I did it, to manage to drag myself over the course and complete it. Rob (my son) has been hauled kicking and screaming into this, he is a strong man and a rugby player, you may have met him serving in the Hero pub? Built for short bursts of power not endurance. He must remember the sponsored bike ride we did 24 years ago, when he was 13, on a tandem. Oh yes! Bonding……. But Mother needed a partner for her mad folly, he stepped in then, and now again. Bless.
Many of you pledged your support for last year’s non-event, quite a few of you paid. If you paid it has been added to this just giving account, as part of this years fundraising.
If you pledged your support or would like to offer support, I would hugely appreciate it if you could hit the button on this page now.
We are entering as Golden Ticket competitors; this means that we have committed to raising a minimum of £3,000.00 for this cause.
Many mant thanks.
Max and Rob
