Story

From Sat. 29th follow live here

I can't believe that I'm back, Rider #084, for my 4th and final instalment of the Pan Celtic Race. This years' race, known as the Magnus Opus, or Greatest Works, is a mind boggling distance of around 2,200 miles! One of the photos is from last year, showing that sometimes you end up having to push your bike up the hills just to keep moving forward.

Starting at Lands End, I'll be riding up through Cornwall and the South West before crossing into Wales and passing St Davids and the Island of Anglesey. After Wales I'll head to Liverpool before boarding a ferry to the Isle of Man, where I'll join the rest of the Pan Celtic Clan, who've trailed from all over the world to join the event. The fist stage, once together, is an overnight 100 mile time trial event all around the island.

After the early morning ferry back to the mainland, the huge climbs of the Lake District will greet us before heading up the west coast taking in the isles of Skye and Mull. The final stretch of the incredible route will take riders across the width of Scotland to the finish in Inverness.

The rules state we must carry everything we need, without support, and only access what is publicly available to all. So a Premiere Inn would be OK but having friends following me in a camper van is not. I plan to be using my trusty bivy bag as much as possible, grabbing a few hours sleep, behind a hedge or in a bus shelter whenever I need to.

This years race has been a four year commitment for me and has only happened thanks to the support of my family. I'll be riding my new bike which I've named Murmuration, and had painted, as a tribute to all the special Starlings who've made it possible for me take on these adventures. Thanks to all the team at Enigma bikes for creating something really extra special.

Visit the Pan Celtic Website for more information and to see documentary films about the previous editions - Can you spot me in the videos?

Once again I'll be proudly flying the flag for Marie Curie. I've been working for them for nearly 2 years and this has given me a great insight into the difference their work makes to people and their families at the end of their lives. Special thanks to Chris and everyone at Flying Colours for making me my special lightweight flags, these will be flapping away through the whole event!

Follow me live via the GPS trackers we all have to carry. Be warned, it can be addictive!
