Story
"Hello, Crossroads motel, how may I help you?"
Crossroads was open for business between 1964 and 1988. (The revival doesn't count because it was a dream.) But it did it ever really close? Maybe, like that service station where Sapphire and Steel were trapped, it still exists, in a loop as endless as Tony Hatch's theme.
Turns out it does. ITVX is putting episodes online. Network DVD is releasing a 94-disc box set of all Noele Gordon's surviving episodes. Maybe the new Russell T Davies drama Nolly has something to do with that. Whatever the case, nobody ever needs to check out of Crossroads motel again.
Some people, though, don't have access to a comfortable but slightly overlit bedroom with a teasmade. But the tireless staff and volunteers of St Basil's in Birmingham are there to help people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, to enable them to find and keep a home, grow their confidence, develop their skills and increase opportunities.
So to raise money for that cause, I am going to attempt to ascend the north face of the Network Noele Gordon Crossroads box set. Over 700 episodes. Each with a sizzling cliffhanger involving someone staying still for slightly too long. I'll report on the psychological effects via my twitter account @drmatthewsweet.
Give me a month. Give what you can.
