Climbing Kilimanjaro · 20 February 2024

We invest in life-changing eye care to help people with sight loss.

Story

Starting on 20 February 2024, I will be scaling Kilimanjaro in Tanzania- the highest peak in Africa and the 4th most prominent on Earth!

At 5,895m above sea level, it's higher than Everest base camp.

It is a 6 day climb up the mountain (2 down). This is classed as 'extreme elevation' and we'll take medication to help our bodies cope with 50% of the sea levels oxygen levels. For context, Everest base camp is classed as high elevation as it's 'only' 5,400m!

I've been training for over 9 months including treks across Wales and Iceland so I hope you understand what a huge undertaking for me this is and the dedication needed.

I'm fundraising for Moorfields Eye Charity.

I've been a patient at Moorfields Eye Hospital since 2016. I have uveitis, inflammation in the eye which can cause pain, redness and blurred vision. I've had several successful operations, and although I still wear glasses, I almost have 20/20 vision- I've no doubt that without Moorfields my sight would be nowhere near as good as it is. I was advised at my first appointment that the pressure was high enough to cause blindness within months of left untreated.

I'm giving back to Moorfields by taking on this epic trek. Please give what you can as every little helps save the sight of patients just like me.
