Story
In August 2022, my beloved Mum, Rhonda, received a challenging diagnosis: Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukaemia (CMML), a rare form of blood cancer.
Since that moment, Mum has faced an incredible journey, navigating various treatments in Australia to stabilise her condition. The culmination of this challenging chapter occurred in May 2023 when she received a life-changing bone marrow transplant from a remarkably generous young donor in the United States. Today, Mum is gradually finding her way back to health, and the unwavering support from my Dad, compassionate doctors, dedicated nurses, and a circle of caring family and friends has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Being based in London, away from my family during this trying time, has presented its own set of challenges. The distance has sometimes left me feeling helpless and isolated, yearning to be closer to support my Mum through the toughest moments of her life. Running has become my therapeutic escape, a means to release stress, alleviate anxiety, and clear my mind. Deciding to train for the London Marathon and raise funds for a cause dear to my heart seemed like the perfect way to bring everything together.
Undoubtedly, the training will be demanding, but it pales in comparison to the challenges my Mum has faced and continues to conquer. Those who know her understand her as one of the kindest and most generous souls, with a heart that radiates warmth. This marathon is our collective way of expressing our unwavering support as she journeys toward full recovery.
My Mum is my constant motivation, urging me to rise every morning during the harsh UK winter for training and to persevere until the finish line on April 21, 2024. However, the additional motivation stems from the knowledge that generous donations will not only aid Mum but also support others facing similar life challenges.
So here I am, raising funds for Leukaemia Care with the intention of representing this remarkable charity at the 2024 London Marathon.
Your time in reading this deeply personal journey means the world to me, and I would be incredibly grateful for any donation to help me reach my goal. With much love, I aim to make you all proud and, most importantly, to honour my dearest Mum.
Matt ❤️ xx
