Story
Well this coming year is going to be fun.
For those that don't know me, I'm Matt and I'm the landlord of The Horseshoes, Nuneaton. We are incredibly driven by charity so we had to get involved.
There are an incredible group of ladies taking on Mount Toubkal, all of them work for GEH and some of them are locals of The Horseshoes, Nuneaton. With the hospital on our door step, we see so many staff/family/patients all come through the door and I just had to tag along and raise some vital funds for their new unit.
For this years charity event, I will be attempting the 177m route along England and Wales - known as Offa's Dyke. I will be doing this solo and unassisted in May 2025, in addition to the climb of Mount Toubkal with the GEH team. In the mean time, we will have some good old knees up raising money along the way. Follow us on social media for race nights, charity nights, and raffles.
Below is a bit of information on what the funds will be used for.
The Breast surgery team are currently located in the main outpatients department at George Eliot Hospital.
This area is currently shared with the Breast Screening Service provided by UHCW. As such this is an area this incredibly busy, that is unable to move due to the imaging modalities within that area, such as mammogram machines.
The unit is responsible for the delivery of a triple assessment clinic for patients with a two week wait referral, this is via a ‘one stop’ framework. The team within the unit also deliver minor procedures such as biopsies, aspirations etc within that area without the appropriate waste facilities such as sluice rooms. Due to the size of the rooms they are also limited on the machinery for diagnostic modalities so we can’t increase the capability of those devices so patients are referred to UHCW.
Our aim with CDC (Community Diagnostic Hub) Phase 3:
The space allocated towards Breast Surgery within the CDC will enable the Breast Surgery Department to move into a purpose built unit. This will include the expansion of clinical examination and procedure rooms, an increase in ultrasound rooms, and an bigger mammogram room. This will enable to the service to expand the types of procedures currently delivered within the unit to allow patients of north Warwickshire to have treatment/diagnostics closer to home without having to travel to UHCW.
The unit will also incorporate a dedicated counselling room – this will be a significant improvement to the current provision where patients currently receive their bad news in the room that they were first examined.
The separation from the UHCW Breast Screening Service will also mean that the patient cohort will be separated, improving the experience of both groups
