The canal loop includes the Coventry Canal, Fazeley and Hawkesbury, then the North Oxford canal past Rugby to Braunston junction, the Grand Union canal through Leamington, Warwick and Solihull, to Aston junction, and the Birmingham and Fazeley canal in 5-6 days covering approximately 20 miles per day, ill be looking at rowing for around 7-8 hrs a day to achieve this, starting on TUESDAY 21ST at the Boot Wharf, Nuneaton and ending hopefully back at the Boot Wharf on SATURDAY 25TH A short walk away from the final finishing place THE HORSESHOES, NUNEATON ready to start the bank holiday Sunday with the first fun filled Horseshoes annual charity day/music festival. The route is picturesque, and passes through a variety of environments, from open countryside to leafy suburbia, to industrial and urban. Sections of it are completely flat, others have steep flights of locks, approximately 130!! Being unsafe to use whilst on a kayak there is a large number of portages using the tow paths on the route.
About me and why I am taking on this challenge.
So, I’m Matt, and I’m the new landlord of The Horseshoes, Nuneaton taking it over on 25th May 2023, this is my first pub and my first job behind the bar or in this industry for that matter. At the start of this venture, I choose The Myton hospices as my charity for the year. Myton is quite close to me and my family, back in 2004/2005 my mum was lucky enough to spend the last part of her life in Myton Warwick branch, and we are so grateful. The staff were amazing and did everything they could to make it easier for my family as well as giving the upmost care and consideration to our mum/wife, they made a really bad situation better things like being assisted at home 1 last time for a large family get together or moving Christmas forward a month so my siblings and I had 1 last Christmas with her. Truly amazing people and as a family we will never be able to say thank you enough. Over the years I’ve tried to do as much fundraising for charity as possible with a large portion of that going towards Myton, from charity days organised at The horseshoes way before I became the landlord, an Olympic triathlon with my twin brother to most recent event were my niece and I abseiled down the side of Coventry Cathedral at the beginning of 2023, this challenge will be my biggest yet.
