THE JANE GOODALL INSTITUTE: Girls Empowerment Program
In 2012, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) formally adopted an ambitious 30-year vision and goal to protect wild chimpanzee populations across their endemic range in Africa. JGI Africa Programs (AP) outlines six conservation strategies to address the sources, causes, and drivers of threats to chimpanzees and their habitats. The Girls Empowerment Program falls under the Africa Programs (AP) Strategy 4: Improving Resilience of Communities through Empowering Women and Girls. This strategy is based on the premise that increasing women and girls’ access to education, appropriate health information, and reproductive health technologies, improves their socioeconomic prospects and reduces the pressure on natural resources caused by population growth. A multitude of research in development economics proves that investment in girls’ education reduces family size and population growth. Sub-themes in this strategy are: (a) gender, environmental education, and climate adaptation; (b) women’s reproductive health and conservation; and (c) healthy communities and healthy habitats.
