OMC Claims fundraising for Special Olympics Ireland

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

This year, I’m taking part in the ‘Mondello24 Cycle’ to support Special Olympics Ireland. They provide fantastic support to athletes with intellectual disabilities across the country.

Now in its 4th year the ‘Mondello24 Cycle’ is an exciting 24 hour ‘distance/endurance’ cycling race event. Similar to Le Mans in motorsport, it is the distance covered in the 24 hours that matters, not first past the post. Various categories/teams compete to complete the maximum number of laps between 12 noon on Saturday the 22nd and 12 noon Sunday 23rd of June. One of the attractions of the event is the opportunity to race through the night on what is largely an unlit circuit, thus providing a unique spectacle in bike racing

Having been coerced into taking part in a 2 man team last year by my friend! and clubmate we have managed to entice a few more members of Comeragh Cycling Club to take part in 2024. This year the club is entering two 4 man teams, an ‘Under 50’s Team’ and an ‘Over 50’s Team’ in what could be the most competitive category of the event. The winning (& youthful!) 4 man team last year clocked up the longest distance of the entire event at 878km’s! While my ‘Over 50’s Team’ have set their sights a little lower, we are aiming to break 800km’s so the speed and pressure is on, morning, noon and night, literally...

OMC Claims has partnered with Special Olympics Ireland and is committed to raising €10,000 through staff lead fundraising in 2024. The funds raised will go towards the many life changing programmes provided by Special Olympics Ireland. Special Olympics Ireland provides a quality year-round sports programme that is embedded in local communities and offers health and wellbeing opportunities to over 8000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. Athletes are given opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing gifts, skills and friendship with their families, fellow athletes and the wider community.

About the charity

Special Olympics is a sport organisation for people with an intellectual disability, currently supporting nearly 8,000 athletes across Ireland, who are training for much more than the physical benefits that come from sport, but the emotional and social development that come from being part of S.O.I.
