When your best friend is diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumour, which is terminal, you feel helpless.
But we are not helpless. There is so much that can be done to support those with similar diagnosis.
Mark Monaghan was truly one of the world’s great guys. Not because of anything he has particularly achieved, but because of who he was and what he was. Mark served his country for 10 years in the Royal Navy and saw action in the Bosnian war when United Kingdom ships were deployed in the region. He was a proud Englishman and a lover of the England Rugby team and Northampton Saints Rugby team. He was a loving husband to Debs and a proud father to George and Katie. He was a friend to all.
Mark was inspirational in the face of this awful disease and it was his inspiration that gave rise to Mark’s Mission. The original mission was a rugby inspired endurance cycle challenge. Between 9 and 17 May 2025 three friends cycled from Newcastle Falcons and visited every Premiership Rugby ground ending at Northampton Saints for the season finale. A journey of around 850 miles raising around £40,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity. Please visit our website www.marksmission.co.uk to read more about what we did and when (a new website is coming very soon which will update and upgrade everything you read and see).
Tragically Mark passed away in October 2025 however Mark’s Mission continues with challenges and initiatives in Mark’s name.
Mark’s Mission started as a bike challenge as summarised above, but it is now a series of events, so while we are keeping the details of the bike event on this page please go to www.marksmission.co.uk and read about everything else we are doing and please come back and donate
The bike challenge started on 9th May 2025 with Andrew Nicholson, Duncan Nicholson and Derek Middlemiss departing Newcastle Falcons rugby stadium, Kingston Park in Newcastle upon Tyne and cycling to every Premiership Rugby ground in the English Premiership. A trip of just under 900 miles in just over 8 days. We had lots of help and support and these can all be seen on the website.
The aim from now on is to continue to raise awareness about brain tumours and to make people understand how devastating they are and how they affect those who have this terrible disease and how it affects their family and friends. We also want to raise as much as we can for the Brain Tumour Charity and the research they do.
Mark’s Mission partners with The Brain Tumour Charity with the aim of raising awareness and vital funds to support brain tumour research. Every penny we raise will go to The Brain Tumour Charity, everyone involved in Mark's Mission is giving their time and support for nothing. So please give generously knowing that every penny you give makes a difference. The new website will detail all our forthcoming events and challenges so please come back and visit again.
