Story
A message from David:
For a bit of context, I agreed to do the Norfolk superhero as part of my, “I’m in!” strategy, which I’ve adopted later in life. As an approach, it leads me into activities I would never have tried otherwise - and the superhero event is by far the most challenging!
Here is the link to what we are doing:

For me, the 1 mile sea swim was the most daunting of the 4 disciplines…especially as I started out only able to do front crawl for 1.5 lengths of a swimming pool! Having taken a lot of time to improve my swimming, when I began to train for the other disciples, I discovered the distances covered makes them all equally hard. Luckily, my superhero partner, Mark Widdowson, who’s doing this for the 7th time, is there to guide, motivate and cajole me through it all.
I’ve now adopted another philosophy - “Just do what Mark does!” And hopefully that will get me round the course.
The 2024 Norfolk Superhero is supporting Burnham Overy Harbour Trust, specifically raising funds for the vital work involved in restoring the creek. This will primarily involve the restoration of the groynes which are crucial in preventing the creek from silting up, as well as taking important measures to reduce erosion of the marshes.
WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?
Burnham Overy Staithe’s salt marshes and creeks are a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to their unique biodiversity, range of ecosystems and large number of habitat specific plants.
The Superhero fundraising will fast-track this major restoration project which may otherwise take many years to complete. Without this work, the fragile ecosystems would suffer enormously. This work will secure this fragile and incredibly important landscape for the next generation.
We would both be grateful for any donations to this very worthy local charity.
Many thanks
Mark & David
