Maz takes on London Marathon 2024 - British Dyslexia Association

London Marathon 2024 · 21 April 2024 ·
I am raising money for the British Dyslexia Association, by taking part in the 2024 London Marathon.
As a primary school teacher and SENDCO, I see firsthand the importance of children being given the support they need in order to succeed.
1 in 10 people have dyslexia; in a class of 30, this is at least 3 children. However, parents are required to pay privately for their child’s assessment - many local authorities do not cater for this on the NHS. This sets parents back at least £400. The BDA runs bursary programmes to help fund assessments for children from lower income families.
Approximately 50% of prison inmates have dyslexia - undiagnosed. Not knowing why you are finding things more difficult than others can be extremely demoralising, which is why a diagnosis is so valuable.
I myself have Irlen Syndrome - a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information. Having a diagnosis at age 27 has not only meant that I know now have strategies to help me read and learn, but also I understand can make sense of some of the things I found difficult growing up.
A donation, big or small, will make a huge difference to the BDA and help to create a dyslexia friendly society that enables dyslexic people of all ages to reach their full potential.
Thanks so much.
