Story

We are raising funds for Just George at CCLG

March to the Moon is a challenge for anyone, anywhere, at anytime to join in with. If you want to help drive forward research into childhood cancer, to find kinder and more effective treatments, then join Just George on this journey to the moon!

Just George supporters, from around the world, will be collectively attempting to reach the miles it would take to reach the moon. All 238,855 miles will be clocked up by supporters running, walking, cycling or even swimming. The event launches on Friday 14th March, with a planned mile walk for children and families on The Shade Primary School’s (Soham) playground. Taking place from 6pm, in the hope the moon will make an appearance for those walking. Everyone and anyone is welcome.

Below are ways you can help Just George to clock up mileage and fundraise with March to the Moon:

1. Could you cover lots of miles to the moon? You could ask friends, family, colleagues, neighbours to sponsor you via the Just Giving page. Ask them to put your name in the comments box so you can track your fundraising.

2. Fancy doing a one-off walk? Pop a donation into the Just Giving page and tell people what you are doing. Talk to people on your journey about Just George and ask them if they can give a little. You could also encourage others to join in, by sharing what you’ve done.

3. Fancy organising your own charity miles? Choose a distance and a location (check the route is safe) and gather a group. Ask entrants to pay to enter. Maybe add in refreshments or a raffle at the end to boost fundraising then bank the funds into the Just Giving page once they have all been collected.

4. Join our Strava Club, 'March to the Moon for Just George', so we can keep a running total of how close we are to the moon!

5. Keep checking in to this Just Giving page where we will publish our progress regularly.

Why are we doing this?

Just George is a Special Named Fund, opened in September 2023, a month before parents Lisa and David Radcliffe said goodbye to their 4 year old son, George. Their fundraising supports the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group to fund vital research into rhabdomyosarcoma, in his memory. This is the aggressive, soft tissue tumour that George was diagnosed with at just 3 years old. His treatment options ran out. The family lived together in Isleham, whilst Lisa was a local headteacher in Soham and David ran his business in Cambridge. Just George has been well supported by these communities and those nearby and has grown a huge supporter base. The fund has grown rapidly enabling them to part-funded two new research projects already. George’s dad David explained more. “We are desperate to grow the fund to support future research. No one should lose a child, let alone lose a child because treatments option have run out. The treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma has not changed in over 40 years and the relapse treatment offers a significantly poor chance of being successful. Childhood Cancer isn’t going anywhere. Research is the answer.” This March, on the lead up to what would have been George’s 6th birthday, supporters Sharon Wright and Issy Brooks will be launching March to the Moon. Fundraising that honours George’s love of space and a fundraising challenge like no other!
