Story
Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page and for donating towards my Land's End To London Challenge 2024, in aid of national sight loss charity, Retina UK.
I am running in support of my best friend Alex Backhouse who is running 17 marathons in 12 days and I will be running two 55km legs of the challenge in 6 days!
This charity is very close to home for me and any support no matter how small is hugely appreciated!
Why Retina UK?
Three generations of Alex's family are affected by retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disorder which causes the breakdown and loss of retinal cells in the eye. For his family, this leads to a gradual and continual loss of peripheral vision, ultimately resulting in a narrow slither of central vision (tunnel vision) and no ability to see at night or in low light. Retina UK supports cutting-edge research to combat inherited sight loss and provides support to those affected.
Inspiration and Motivation
Family is the inspiration for this route. Starting in Cornwall, where Alex's grandparents used to live and where he spent many a summer holiday, and finishing in London symbolises not just a physical challenge but a deeply personal one. The quiet endurance and resilience Alex's family has shown in dealing with this invisible disability has profoundly impacted him. It’s a powerful reminder that not all disabilities can be seen.
How You Can Help
Your donations will directly support Retina UK, funding vital research and offering essential support to those living with inherited sight loss. As there is currently no treatment that can slow or stop the progression of retinitis pigmentosa, every contribution - no matter the size - brings us one step closer to research, clinical trials, support, and, ultimately, a cure. Please consider donating and sharing this page with your friends and family.
