Story
Hi, it’s me Maddie. I have decided to raise money for Children in Need to help families and children. On November 9th, I will be hiking to the top of Helvellyn, the third highest mountain in England. Would you like to sponsor me? In the UK, 30% of children live in poverty. I’m aiming to help Children in Need fix this by raising at least £250, but I need your help.
In a remarkable show of determination, six-year-old Maddie is taking on a big challenge this week for a cause close to her heart. On November 9th, she will hike to the top of Helvellyn to raise funds for BBC Children in Need. Her goal: to help families and children in need across the UK.
Maddie’s challenge will take her up Helvellyn, one of the most iconic peaks in England’s Lake District and the third-highest mountain in the UK outside of Scotland. Her route to the summit will cover approximately 10 kilometers, with a height gain of 760 meters from the base to the peak, reaching a final elevation of 950 meters above sea level.
Despite her young age, Maddie is determined to make a difference for children and families in need. Originally, her goal was to raise at least £250 to support the estimated 30% of UK children living in poverty – a target she’s far exceeded, with her fundraising now surpassing £700. As part of her big dream, she also hopes to climb all 214 Wainwrights, and her upcoming Helvellyn hike is a major step towards achieving that goal.
