Story
Please support my bike ride to Amsterdam in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
My Mum, Ivy Elsey was a Scout Leader, Primary School Teacher, Offsted Inspector, CQC Expert by Experience and Health Watch Volunteer. She knew her time was limited but remained fiercely independent and wanted to die at home. The hospice at home team supported her with advice and guidance over her last few months and she spent a week in the hospice to manage some of her symptoms. The nursing care was delivered by the community nurses,a home care team and I was with her in the last weeks, days and nights. Over 40 years of nursing had not prepared me for this role, but the hospice Nurse Line was there for me 24 hours a day advising, supporting and coordinating the community services. I knew I was only a call away from advice and support day or night. It enabled me to help Mum to be in control of her final journey - to die in the place she loved. We did this together for her and she died very peacefully on 27th July 2018.
I want to do this challenge, in memory of Mum and to ensure others can be supported by St Wilfrid’s hospice and the Nurse Line in the future.
Starting in Eastbourne, our journey will pass along the south coast, across the channel, and then through the cycle-friendly cities and countryside in France, Belgium and Holland, finishing in Amsterdam. We’ll cycle past beaches, along waterways, and treelined canals dotted with windmills
I am funding my own adventure so every penny you donate will go directly to support the amazing work of St Wilfrid’s.
Please support me to raise £2,000 in any way you can.
