Story

In memory of my beloved parents, who bravely battled leg ulcers, I am joining the 25-km Bristol to Bath Trail Escape Challenge on 5 October (my late mom's birthday) with my husband, Paul, in support of Legs Matter, a UK-based campaign and coalition supported by The Tissue of Viability that is raising the alarm about the hidden harm crisis in leg and foot care.

Your generous donation will help:

Fund research: Advance medical advancements for the prevention and treatment of leg ulcers.

Raise awareness: Educate the public about the condition and its impact on individuals' lives.

Provide support: Offer resources and assistance to those affected by leg ulcers.

It starts unexpectedly but if neglected could be life-threatening -- a black bruise-like mark on the legs, especially the ankles, then gradually spreading and affected parts swelling. There are many types and it affects blood circulation, which eventually affects the heart. It can be expensive to treat and treatment is a hit-and-miss sometimes. My dad tried his very best to have it treated and had to endure so many medicines, but it caught up with him in the end. He appeared to be recovering but it already affected his veins and blood circulation. This is why it's very personal to me and I would love for our elderly to have a better quality of life in their advanced age.

Non-healing wounds of the leg and foot are one of the biggest health challenges -- and one of the most overlooked health issue -- of our time but it is a challenge that can be solved. Everyone has a right to good-quality lower leg and foot care that promotes healing and reduces the risk of harm. We need to improve awareness, understanding and treatment of lower leg and foot conditions, we can achieve more by working together than we can by working alone.

Operating under the governance of the Society of Tissue Viability (was TVS), Legs Matter is a coalition of eight healthcare charities and not-for-profit organisations. Legs Matter is funded by these organisations, charitable donations and our corporate partners.
