Story
As the British and French governments reinforce control and violence at the border, there continue to be hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people who are seeking safety and dignity, and RCK tries to meet one of the present needs. Alongside other organisations providing firewood, bedding, electrical goods, dry food, or play for children, RCK cooks and takes hot food and drinks around the city of Calais to offer to anyone that needs it. The team of volunteers work together to create delicious and nutritious meals, using recipes from places many people have journeyed from, to comfort and sustain. We have a responsibility to learn about and disrupt the foundations of racism, imperialism and capitalism born in the UK that force people away from their homelands, whilst showing up to provide hot meals each day as people make their way. It would be great to raise enough money to support the kitchen through the summer, and to help the organisation develop in ways that strengthen solidarity and unity, between other organisations, through education, training, action and reflection, to empower and liberate all people at the border. I agreed to run to bring attention to the border, because I see most people do not know about the violence and dehumanisation happening there. For information, visit the Human Rights Observers website, search Conversations from Calais or ask me questions. I was not a runner before hand, so have trained for the last 12 weeks, and it's been tough, and also good to practise getting stronger. I will take RCK to the streets of London, and share the strength I have felt working alongside inspiring people over the last few years, as we work to transform greed and power hoarding into justice, safety, compassion and equity. Anything you donate will be greatly appreciated.
