Story

This year (May 25th), I’ve decided to take on one of the toughest challenges of my life: a triathlon. But I’m not doing it for personal glory or fitness goals—I’m doing it for young people with dementia, a cause that has deeply touched my heart.

Dementia is often seen as an illness that affects the elderly, but what many people don’t realise is that it can strike young people too, in their 30s, 40s, and 50s—prime years when they should be living life to the fullest, building careers, raising families, and chasing their dreams. Instead, they’re often faced with a devastating diagnosis that robs them of their independence, their memories, and their future.

I’ve seen firsthand how cruel this disease can be. A close friend/family member of mine was diagnosed far too young. Watching them struggle with the simplest things, seeing their spark dim, and witnessing the toll it takes on their loved ones has been heartbreaking. What’s worse is that support for younger people with dementia is so limited—they often feel isolated and forgotten because they don’t fit the typical image of someone with this disease.

That’s why I’m dedicating every mile of this triathlon to them. Every swim stroke, every pedal, and every step will be for those who can no longer run, who feel trapped in their own minds, and who deserve so much more than the hand they’ve been dealt.

The charity Young People with Dementia is doing incredible work to offer these individuals and their families the support they desperately need—whether it’s through specialist care, community programs, or simply helping them reclaim moments of joy in a life overshadowed by this cruel disease.

This triathlon is going to push me to my limits, but it’s nothing compared to the challenges these young people face every single day. I want to make a difference for them, but I can’t do it alone.

If you can, please consider donating to this cause. Every pound you give will bring hope and support to those who need it most. Together, we can make sure they’re not forgotten.

Thank you for believing in me and for helping me fight for a brighter future for young people with dementia.

We are YPWD and our charity provides support services throughout the working week to people with dementia who are diagnosed under the age of 65. We support families from as early as in their 30’s, who never could have foreseen that they would be living with a progressive disease so early on in their lives. Our charity provides a safe and fun environment, reducing loneliness, promoting confidence, boosting mood and offering a helping hand to not just the person with dementia, but their loved ones who are coming to terms with the illness.
