Story
On Thursday 2nd November 2006, my son Ethan, aged just 6 years old, was walking to school with his mum when he was stuck by a car while crossing the road at a pelican crossing. The lights were on red and the green man was flashing as they crossed but the car failed to stop and ploughed straight through the crossing, killing Ethan instantly.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss his beautiful smile and his infectious laugh. Over the last 17 years I've watch his friends and family grow up, go to university, get married, have children of their own and I often wonder what kind of a man he would have been.
I often imagine him standing on the sidelines supporting his younger brother playing football, or taking his little sisters to ballet and swimming. They never got the chance to meet their big brother.
This November, in memory of Ethan, I'm taking part in the #Brake5 Challenge for Road Safety Week to raise funds for Brake, the road safety charity.
Every day, five people die on UK roads. I am challenging myself to run 5 miles every day throughout November in memory of those lives, completing a total of 150 miles from 1st to 31st November.
Hopefully, through the incredible work done by Brake and your generous donations, we can make the world a safer place so no more families have to lose a loved one needlessly on UK roads.
It's a shocking statistic that every day, five people die on UK roads. Road crashes are devastating events for everyone involved. When the worst happens, Brake’s National Road Victim Service is there to help. Brake supports hundreds of families affected by road crashes each month. All funds raised through the #Brake5 Challenge will help Brake provide more care for road victims and campaign for safe roads for everyone.
Wish me luck and thank you for your support!
