Story
Education in this country isn't fair. Pupils from low-income backgrounds are not less able than their more affluent peers, however they often lack the resources and tools that help them to achieve. With proven impact, Action Tutoring has been supporting disadvantaged school pupils for over a decade, providing them with high-quality maths and English tuition by harnessing the power of brilliant volunteer tutors to help them succeed. Our vision is a world in which no child's life chances are limited by their socio-economic background.
In order to support Action Tutoring on their mission, I am going to complete an adapted triathlon in which I travel the Olympic distances in swimming, cycling and running. I will be swimming 1500 m, travelling 40 km on a hand-bike and 'running' 10 km on a piece of gym equipment called an elliptical which supports the movement around my knee and hip joint.
This is no mean feat for me! I was born with a congenital short-left femur and, after undergoing leg lengthening surgery, suffered from complications from the surgery that left me dependent on walking aids. I have a dislocated patella (knee-cap), arthritis in my knee, leg length difference of 6 inches and issues with my ankle and hip joints. Despite my disability, I have found a way to stay active in swimming and I make use of Nuffield Gym's accessible facilities and range of inclusive resources. There is no denying that these Olympic distances could create obstacles. However, I am very privileged to be able to find adaptions that allow me to take on this challenge and raise funds for such a worthy cause.
Your support is greatly appreciated!
