Story
As some of you may know I have volunteered at Matthew’s House for coming up to 2 years now.
Matthew’s house helped me at a time in my life where I was doing some very difficult soul searching of my own and I wanted and needed a purpose and to give back in some way.
Joining the team has been beyond rewarding but has also opened my eyes to problems I didn’t realise were so rife in our own city.
The Swans Big Sleep Out offers a very small glimpse into what it’s like to even spend one single night outside of the comfort of our own homes. Unfortunately this is a stark reality for so many people.
Matthews house is a pillar of hope to so many guests who visit, whether it be a one off or a regular haven. I’m honoured to have the opportunity to raise funds for a fantastic cause but to also raise awareness for the issue at hand.
A message from the sponsor:
Homelessness and rough sleeping are still huge problems for people in Swansea. The causes are complicated, and the solutions are equally complex. This event will highlight the issues and put a focus on two charities working together to help. It will raise much needed funds and give wonderful volunteer fundraisers a tiny taste of sleeping out in the cold of Autumn. We know this doesn’t compare with the uncertainty and hardship of actual homelessness, but it does help focus the mind, and offers a chance to make a difference by raising funds.
As Thom from Matthews House said, "working together with friends and partners is always better for everyone". So let's work on this together and help 'bring hope to people in need'.
This year we will be sleeping within the bowl of the stadium overlooking the pitch with access to the concourse in case we have a repeat of last's year's weather.
