On Decemeber 1st 2021 my family and I recieved the shock of our lives. My Mam, Louise, had been diagnosed with an incurable cancer called Mesothelioma. A rare type of cancer that is related to the exposure of Asbestos and affects the lining of the lung. Typically, symptoms have upto a 30 year latency to present themselves and why they can often be passed off as signs of ageing. There are currently around 2700 new cases each year in the UK.

My Mam has always been a fit and healthy woman; however throughout 2021 Mam started to suffer from shortness of breath, fatigue and reduced appetite. Following many visits to the GP and being told it sounded like Anxiety, Mam realised something just wasnt quite right and pushed for more detailed examinations. This then brought us to the diagnosis on December 1st.

While at the hospital Mam was introduced to Leah Taylor, Head of Nursing for Mesothelioma UK. It was Leah who spoke with Mam and my Dad in more detail regarding the disease and what treatments options were available. This is also when Mam was made aware of Readley Support group and the amazing support services they offer to those affected along with their families.

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet all at Readley.

I think its fair to say we were all a little sceptical at first, unsure what to expect, however quickly found ourselves feeling great comfort knowing Mam didn't have to embark on the journey alone and had access to support and guidance from some truly amazing and knowledgeable people. Anyone who knows my Mam, knows she's not the type to speak up in a room full of people, however on occasion shared her story and experiences with those in attendance. The pride we felt in these moments seeing her do this 💙

The love and support we have been shown from everyone involved with Readley, including others affected, has been a blessing and comfort in such a scary and uncertain time.

We'd love to show our thanks to Readley by raising as much funds as possible in Mam's memory.

She was taken from us far too soon and under such unfair and unneseccary circumstances. The least we can do is help Readley continue to offer support and guidance to those affected. While they also continue to raise awareness of the dangers of Asbestos exposure.
