A year ago, the last piece of my mum was given up to the relentless, insatiable, cruel disease, Dementia. Mum had it for roughly 7 long years starting with vascular dementia and in the later couple of years, Alzheimer’s as well.

In some ways we were fortunate as mum never got angry, foul mouthed, aggressive or violent and I know that many families are not so lucky. Moreover, Mum was mostly content, smiling and seemingly happy. Even through this horrible time, she was still looking after us. We were also fortunate that my Dad and all of our family pulled together and were able to care for Mum at home for the whole of her life.

The first few years the changes/losses/missing pieces were minimal, month by month a bit more forgetfulness. But they picked up speed taking away elements of speech, recognition and mobility week by week. The last few months of my Mums life were spent bedridden, looking out on her garden. In her final days, she was surrounded by our family and I hope she knew how loved she was, still is and how desperately we miss her.

My good friend Cheryl has kindly agreed to trek with me over 5 days from Cusco to Machu Picchu in Peru along the Inca Trail on 26th April 25. We are self-funding the trip but are hoping to raise money via donations for Dementia UK to aid them in finding a cure for this life sucking disease. So many of us know someone who is suffering or has suffered from one form or another of Dementia.
