Story
Meet Rive she is a beautiful happy, smiley, brave little girl who despite her difficulties, has an ability to light up the room with her infectious smile and laughter. Rive has Rett syndrome.
Rett Syndrome is a post-natal neurological disorder, which most often affects little girls, around the age of 12 months - 4 years.
Estimated to affect 1:10,000 people, Rett Syndrome is most often seen in girls and women because the gene which causes Rett is on the X chromosome. Girls and women have two X chromosomes whereas boys have one. The consequence of not having that 'back up' copy of the gene is devastating. Most children and adults with Rett are unable to speak, walk, or use their hands. Breathing problems, feeding tubes, seizures, anxiety, gastrointestinal, and orthopaedic issues are common.
Rett syndrome is devastating for a family. Having suspected something was not quite right, to suddenly be told your child will be profoundly disabled, with multiple health problems including epilepsy, a curved spine, breathing problems, feeding difficulties and gut/bowel issues.
Rett UK is there to pick up the pieces; emotional support, high quality, accurate advice & information, advocacy, reducing isolation, empowering families, building emotional resilience and helping the person with Rett syndrome live a life worth living.
Rive enjoys attending therapy sessions at PACES School, hydrotherapy and swimming. She also enjoys watching Peppa Pig, Paddington, Zog and the Flying Doctors. Taking part in guided activities, being outdoors and visiting farms and petting zoos.
Rive's family has been hugely impacted by her condition, yet they will be eternally grateful for the support, advice and communities they have found in the two RETT CHARITIES, Reverse Rett and Rett UK.
The work they are doing, to both support families and search for a cure is truly heroic.
They are small charities, with limited resources and even less money to carry out this valuable work.
After everything Rive and her family have been through, they are determined to help these vital charities. Therefore it only felt right that Myself and David did something in supporting Rive and her family in raising vital funds for a charity that has and continues to help them through this difficult time in their lives.
We will be undertaking the Sheffield 10K on September the 29th 2024
Any donation you see fit to make towards these wonderful charities would be greatly appreciated.
Much Love & Thanks
Lisa & David xx
