Running for Myanmar: A Race Against Despair – Even Against My Own Body
My heart aches for Myanmar, my homeland. The recent devastating earthquake has left countless families shattered, homes reduced to rubble, and lives irrevocably changed. Millions are now facing unimaginable hardship, desperately in need of food, shelter, and medical care.
Adding to this tragedy, the suffering of my people has been compounded by deeply concerning reports. Even in the immediate aftermath of this natural disaster, when the focus should be solely on rescue and aid, there are disturbing accounts of continued airstrikes in some areas. This not only exacerbates the existing crisis but also creates an environment of fear and insecurity for those already vulnerable.
This tragedy has hit close to home in a deeply personal way. I recently learned that one of my dear friends, a fellow doctor dedicated to serving our communities, was tragically lost in the earthquake. The pain of this loss is immense, and it fuels my determination to do whatever I can to help those who are still fighting for their lives and struggling to rebuild.
As a doctor originally from Myanmar, my first instinct was to return home and offer my medical skills. However, the current political situation under the military government makes it unsafe for me to do so. As an activist against the dictatorship, my return would put me at serious risk of arrest and detention. It is a painful reality to be unable to be there physically, on the ground, providing the urgent medical assistance so desperately needed.
But I refuse to stand by and do nothing. That is why I have decided to participate in the British Red Cross "Race to Respond 10k for Myanmar." On April 12th , 2025, I will be pushing my body to its limits to cover 10K within 24 hours. This is no small feat for me. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been battling the lingering effects of long COVID, including post-COVID myocarditis and sinus tachycardia. Everyday activities can be a challenge, and the thought of completing a 10K would have seemed impossible just a short while ago.
However, the suffering of my people in Myanmar dwarfs my own health struggles. Knowing that millions are displaced, injured, and grieving, and that even after the earthquake, reports suggest continued airstrikes are adding to their fear and vulnerability, ignites a fire within me. My personal discomfort is nothing compared to the immense hardship they are enduring.
Every step I take during this 10K will be in memory of my friend, for the millions who have lost everything, and for the future of Myanmar. Despite the challenges my body presents, I am determined to complete this race. Your generous donation, no matter the size, will directly support the Red Cross's crucial work, helping them reach those most affected by the earthquake and the ongoing challenges.
Please join me in this race against despair. Let us show the people of Myanmar that they are not forgotten and that we, the world cares. Your support can provide a lifeline in these desperate times and will fuel my every step.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
With million thanks,
Lin
