Story
Change the Lives of Some of the Most Vulnerable Children in Africa
I can't believe that I will be 58 (yes 58!!) on Monday 7th August. In my head I am still 22 and would love to celebrate by raising money for Act4Africa, a charity I helped to found, whose work in Uganda inspires me every day.
Our focus is on giving vulnerable young children the best start in life at our early years learning centre in Mayuge district, one of the poorest areas of Uganda.
We also provide comprehensive support and training to teenage mothers to help them to build confidence, learn the skills to set up micro businesses and escape the crippling poverty that limits their life chances.
How will your donations be spent?
I am desperate to help fund the building of a playground and to provide early learning toys and books for the 3-6 year olds who attend our school, Kathy's Centre, named after my gorgeous friend, school teacher Kathy Smedley who set the wheels in motion to launch the charity 22 years ago. Sadly, we lost Kathy to cancer 7 years ago but her passion to help the destitute and give thousands of young people a better future through education, lives on through our amazing Ugandan team and our wonderful team of supporters and donors in the UK.
Act4Africa is an award-winning NGO, working with long-standing partners. If you want to find out more about what we do, please log onto www.Act4Africa.org
Every day we are working to reduce poverty and transform communities through our health, education, agriculture and livelihood programmes.
Reducing gender inequality is central to our work. In our experience, it provides the most fundamental obstacle to eradicating poverty.
I will be heading to Uganda to work with our local team, our children and young mothers on 17th August and would love to send you photos of the work we are doing.
Please take the time to watch the wonderful video of 6 year old Kemigisha, Angela Gloria below, who was so proud to do the welcome speech at her recent graduation from Kathy's Kindergarten. She is certainly a leader of the future and we are so proud of every child who attends our centre, desperate to learn and so grateful for the opportunity.
At Act4Africa, every pound has the potential to change a life.
Thank-you so much for making my birthday by considering making a donation to Act4Africa. I could not hope for a better gift than to see our children and our teenage mums flourish through your help and support.
