Story

My mother, Pota, is my hero and I owe all I have experienced in life to her. She raised my twin brother, Stephen, and me by herself, taking on the role of both a mom and a dad, and she made it look easy. Mom spread love constantly. She was an English as a Second Language Teacher and Speech Pathologist who dedicated over 30 years to teaching children. She raised my twin and I to be compassionate, to help others, take risks, and keep active. She encouraged me to support causes I was passionate about. It is because of her that I am motivated to be the best I can be in all aspects of my life.

My mom has always been my best friend, one of the most caring, compassionate people I have ever met. I am forever grateful to have someone who supported me so much. She would do anything for Stephen and me. She was our biggest cheerleader. From the time I was four years old, she was bringing me to the soccer field to play youth soccer or the ice rink for hockey. We have so much in common, from loving Motown music and Greece to chocolate and sports. We never left the house without a hug, never hung up the phone without an “I love you”, and never went to sleep without saying “good night” to one another.

In April of 2022, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her biggest fear came true, as the disease she had watched her mother battle for over ten years was now waging war against her. At her core, I know she is still the lovely, kindhearted lady who raised us, even if now her memory is dwindling and everyday life presents more of a challenge for her.

I have always been an active person so I started running as an outlet to cope with the stress, helplessness, and complicated feelings that come with having a loved one suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. In the fall of 2022, I ran the New York City marathon, selected via the lottery. In the spring of 2023, I ran the London Marathon as a charity runner for the Alzheimer’s Society. Then, in the fall of 2023, I ran the Chicago Marathon, gaining entry from the lottery. I completed three marathons in less than eleven months. I aim to complete all six Abbott World Marathon Majors one day in dedication to my mom. I now have my sights set on the Berlin Marathon for September 2025, which will mark just over three years since my mom’s diagnosis.

I will be running with Alzheimer’s Research UK, a leading dementia research charity. Your donation helps scientists and researchers find new ways to diagnose dementia, develop new treatments and find a cure for dementia.

Thank you!
