Story

In Memory of

Christine Margaret Lewis-Philipps

19th Aug 1936 - 29th June 2026

The eldest daughter of Doctor David and Mrs Phyllis Hughes of Greengables, St Clears and wife of the late William Lewis-Philipps of Clyngwynne Mansion, Llanboidy.

Christine spent her early years enjoying Pembrokeshire with her younger siblings, Janet, Sian and, John.

Much of Christines education was spent away from Wales, first at Queen Ann’s School in Caversham, Reading (1948-53), where she achieved 7 O-Level equivalent credits, before moving to college to study Domestic Science, gaining a 1st Class Honours Diploma at Cayham Court, Ludlow (1953-55). It was at this time where her talent for lacrosse excelled, seeing her representing Wales on several occasions.

In 1955 Christine followed in her father’s footsteps, into the medical profession, starting her career at The Middlesex Hospital (1955-59), achieving her SRN nursing qualification and graduating as gold medallist.

Over the next 39 years Christine had several positions, notably at Priory Street hospital Carmarthen (59-60), Glangwili Hospital Carmarthen (68-82), White Mill Special Hospital Carmarthen (83-85), Matron at Military School, Somerset (85-86), before finishing her career as Deputy Matron at Trinity College Carmarthen (86-98), managing the needs of 1500 students.

Christine lived a long and varied life, and it is with great sadness that we have lost such a character so close to her 90th birthday.

You will be sorely missed mum.

God Bless
