For A Few Dollars More Tour – the 1000 mile cycling challenge of 2024, in memory of Gary Grindal, raising much needed funds for the Garden House Hospice, based in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire.
Gary lost his battle with cancer in 2022. Gary played a huge part in the local community, serving as local councillor, chairman of the local housing association ... Gary, his wife Tracey, sons Jordan, Christian & Rhys and wider family were supported through their most difficult times by the unwavering staff of the Garden House Hospice.
Gary’s support for the community and local charities was tireless, often combining his love of Mod music with charity events, such as the very popular "March of the Mods".
On the 2nd anniversary of Gary’s passing the charity baton is being passed to his son Jordan, Brother-in-law Les Stanton and family friend James Hare as they prepare to embark on a 1000 mile self-guided cycling challenge to raise money for the Garden House Hospice (GHH) in Letchworth Garden City.
GHH provides free specialist palliative care for patients, families and carers facing life limiting illnesses from across North Hertfordshire, Stevenage and towns and villages in Central Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, serving a population of around 260,000 people. Costing over £6.5m a year to provide these services, GHH need to raise £9,700 every day in charitable income and greatly rely on the support of the community - local businesses, groups and individuals to help fund their work.
In the last year GHH answered 239 advice line calls, made 6,710 home visits and ran 4,342 rehab and wellbeing activities.
For A Few Dollars More Tour aims to raise money to support the Garden House Hospice with their ongoing care provisions and “Our New Chapter” as the Hospice launches its innovative new Frailty Service in 2024. Garden.
Starting from the London Stadium, For A Few Dollars More Tour weaves it’s way through eastern France and finishes at the Sad Hill Cemetery in central Spain, taking in the imposing Pyrennes mountains on the way, and with only 9 days to cycle the route the trio will need to be cycling over 100 miles a day.
A strange route? we hear you say, well Gary made many trips to the London Stadium, some more joyous than others! as a lifelong supporter of his beloved West Ham United. As for Sad Hill Cemetery, well that reflects Gary’s love of spaghetti western films, with Jordan recalling many a Sunday evening sat watching the films on repeat. Sad Hill Cemetery appears in the finale of Sergio Leones famous spaghetti western “dollars” trilogy, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, in fact Gary was such a fan that in 2021 he made a donation to the renovation of the cemetery film set, which had been abandoned since the filming, in return Gary's name was added to one of the film set tomb stones displayed there. Unfortunately Gary’s fight with Cancer meant he never got the chance to visit the site once the restoration work was completed.
It will be the mission of the Few Dollars More Tour to reach the cemetery, see the renovation work and to find Gary’s tombstone.
