Story
On April 21st I will be taking on the incredible challenge of running the London marathon all in support of the Royal National Institute of blind people ( RNIB )
This journey is particularly meaningful to me as back in May 2023 - randomly out of nowhere and with no warning I noticed distinct changes in my vision!!! After a ton of tests, I was diagnosed with a retinal disease that’s resulted in having to deal with the overwhelming challenges of sight loss! As my family and friends will know, I am always out and about busy embracing life to its fullest - this diagnosis has been hard and at times very challenging.
Not many of you will know that I have an overwhelming fear of hospitals, and suffer with anxiety particularly health anxiety !! It was only after constant nagging from my husband and close friends that eventually got me into hospital to get this diagnosis.
In the face of panic and fear of losing my sight I discovered an unexpected ally – running! It has proven to be more than just a form of exercise, running has become a a way for me to escape these challenges and cope with my anxieties, a means to reclaim control over my life. I am reminded on every run that there is a strength within me that I never knew I had, and I can overcome many obstacles.
So when I was offered a place to run the London marathon for the RNIB it was a no brainer it has always been something I would like to do but never had the determination like I have now! I’m flooded with excitement, nervousness and doubt daily but I am going to give it my all as it’s such an important cause.
RNIB provides essential services and resources and emotional support to individuals and families navigating the challenges of extensive vision loss. It is extremely daunting and emotional, and our sight is one of the senses we can all easily take for granted!
Please support me with this huge challenge I’m going to need all the help I can get to get me over that finish line!!
Your contribution, no matter how big or small will directly impact the lives of those who our grappling with these changes. Together we can find research for new treatments, provide essential support services and offer a glimmer of hope to those who find some days they are feeling lost in the darkness!!
