Story
Joanne was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer in 2017. Following chemotherapy, radiotherapy and several operations she was given the all clear. After just reaching the 5 year all clear mark in November 2022, Joanne began to suffer with severe headaches. Despite consistently raising this with GP’s, Joanne was told her symptoms were only menopause related or stress related headaches. In February, after taking herself to A&E for an emergency scan, Joanne was quickly diagnosed with a brain tumour and later tests confirmed that the Triple Negative Cancer had returned. After a courageously fought battle of 2 months, which Joanne spent mostly in hospital, we were heartbroken to discover that the cancer had become terminal. Joanne passed away with family by her side on the 23rd of April 2023.
Joanne was fit, young, healthy, bubbly & full of life - just like many other woman who are diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. TNBC is most common in women under 40, it accounts for 15% of all breast cancer diagnoses, and is the fastest spreading type of breast cancer. Despite these statistics, TNBC is still relatively unheard of and under researched when it comes to treatment. Unlike other forms of breast cancer, Triple Negative does not respond to ongoing hormone therapy, which leaves women hoping & waiting that the dreaded cancer doesn’t return following chemotherapy. The average survival rate of 5 years being 66%.
The Benno's Boobs Foundation has been set up to raise money in order to aid research into Triple Negative Breast Cancer. The foundation also aims to support individuals that are diagnosed with TNBC, as well as their families and carers. One of the founders, Sophie Emma, was diagnosed with TNBC at the same time as Joanne and they created a strong bond as they went through their treatment journey together. The foundation have supported our family through this difficult time, and we would want nothing more than to find better treatment for other ladies going through this horrible disease.
We will be raising money for this charity by completing the Adidas Full Marathon in April 2024. Please let us know if you would like to join the challenge or come along and support us! We are so appreciative of any donations towards our chosen charity in memory of our beautiful Mum.
