Story
I would like to pay tribute to my partner Laura Fish, who has died unexpectedly, by raising money to help children in Eswatini – formerly Swaziland. Laura was in the country in the ‘90s during the AIDS epidemic and saw the impact it had upon women and families. In her writing, she gave them a voice, treating their stories with empathy and respect. In this, Black History month, it would mean so much to me if you could help remember Laura by contributing to a cause she cared about so passionately. It is an incredibly sad time for myself, Laura’s children, her colleagues and students at Northumbria University and her many friends and readers around the world. But I’m hoping that with your generosity some good can come out of what’s happened. Laura had this to say about the issue. “When I lived in Eswatini, the HIV infection rate among women of child-bearing age exceeded 42%, believed to be the highest in the world at the time. The emergence of child-headed families, attributed to the increasing number of HIV and AIDS orphans, was a stark reality I witnessed first-hand.” Thank you for reading and contributing if you are able.
