Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. For those who don’t know, I work in the Adult Diabetes Team at Gloucester and Cheltenham Hospital. We work to support people with type 1 diabetes to live as-normal-a-life as possible.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and currently there is no official “cure”. The treatment is with insulin; a hormone which must be injected multiple times a day. It’s a rare treatment in the sense that we give individuals with the condition the responsibility to decide the dose of their treatment. We teach them how to inject, and educate them about the numerous factors which will influence how much insulin they need, but other than that, they’re on their own…
The constant checking of blood glucose levels. The injection every time you eat. The appointments. The health anxiety. The comments and misconceptions from friends and family. The ruined plans because your glucose levels are too high or too low… It’s relentless and it’s lifelong. It can be lonely and it can be exhausting. I’d encourage you to take a second to think about how this diagnosis would feel.
So… On the 31st March, I will be running Gloucester’s 10km race and on the 19th May, I’ll be attempting the AJ Bell Great Bristol Run; Bristol’s half marathon. I’ve chosen to raise money for JDRF which is the leading charity for support and research for type 1 diabetes. They are working to find a cure for this burden of a disease, but also make incredible resources for individuals with diabetes, for parents and carers, and for health care professionals like myself to improve the knowledge and skills on how to manage type 1 diabetes.
