Story
Laura : I am not a runner. An ex-cross fitter, occasionally enthusiastic about fitness when I can be bothered, but absolutely not a runner.
I have chosen to put myself through a half marathon in honour of my nephew, my best wee guy, Finlay.
Victoria is a good runner; but as a mum of 2 young kids, and a business to run she get absolutely no time to herself so the only running she manages to do every day is running around after the kids!
Victoria and I have been friends for 35 years, and running is probably the only thing left that we haven’t done together. I am so grateful to Victoria for supporting me, and Finlay….
Finlay is nearly 13, neurodivergent with delayed speech and has struggled with various health issues his whole life. But that is the least interesting thing about him. He’s a ball of never ending energy and enthusiasm and sheer unbridled joy. All Finlay wants is a ball and some open space to run, maybe some animals, an aeroplane would be great too. His emotional intelligence is off the chart and his giggle would soften the hardest hearts.
It’s hard work for my sister, Kim and brother in law, Rod though, his boundless energy is inexhaustible and safe spaces to play are not as common for neurodivergent or differently abled children like Finlay.
That’s where The Yard comes in. A safe and welcoming play space specially created for those children with different needs. Somewhere Finlay can be completely himself and explore and play independently while Kim and Rod can meet other parents and share tips and empathy and support.
The Yard creates beautiful havens for play for disabled children, but even more than that, opportunities for fun, friendship and community building. Support and a sense of belonging. Somewhere to feel safe to take risks. A place of understanding without judgement. A vital lifeline for whole families.
So I, the non-runner, am going to put myself through 13.1 miles for Finlay! If you are able to then please show Finlay some love by donating to his favourite place so they can keep putting smiles on kids’ faces.
