Story
On the 13th October I will be running the Manchester Half Marathon for The Christie. Charity. This will be just one week short of a year to the day since my diagnosis. The 20th October 2023 will be etched in my memory forever. That moment people talk about, when life really does change in an instant.
The Christie has played a big part in my journey, so I wanted to set myself the challenge of completing the Manchester half marathon, partly as a recovery milestone but also to raise funds for the incredible Christie.
I'm conscious of asking for donations in the current financial climate, so please know that I wouldn't be asking you to dig deep without digging deep myself. Whilst running has often been a lifeline to me over the years...when my legs are moving, my brain stops, and I am at peace. This is the furthest I have ever run!
I'll be running 10 months after major surgery for a total thyroidectomy and neck dissection. This surgery resulted in nerve damage, leaving me with significant pain and numbness from my head down to my collar bone and upper back. Running with a numb shoulder definitely has it's challenges. It will also be less than 6 months since I completed Radiation treatment. The side effects of this treatment can linger for 12 months, so I'll be pushing through to find the emotional and physical strength to complete this challenge.
Sadly too many of us will face this fight, or we will have to watch someone we love fight. I know first hand the difference the Christie makes to people's lives. Not only does it provide wonderful care, it offers hope. My future may still be uncertain, but it's full of hope. Thanks to the amazing care and treatment I've recieved, I have another shot at this crazy, beautiful life. And for that I am forever thankful.
Please help me in giving a little to this great cause. Let's make a difference, for all of those that have fought, for those still fighting, and for those who are yet to fight 🫶
