Story
On Sunday, 27th April 2025, siblings Laura and Jack Dowsing will be running the TCS London Marathon in support of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). We’re taking on this challenge in memory of our dad, Roy, who we lost two years ago and meant the world to us and who benefited greatly from the RNIB’s incredible support.
The RNIB played a vital role in the later stages of our dad’s life, and we want to give back to this amazing organisation that made such a difference to him and our family. When our dad began to lose his sight in his sixties, due to Stargardt Syndrome, the RNIB was there every step of the way. They arranged a befriending service, introducing Dad to Richard, an incredible person who visited him every fortnight. Richard’s visits were a lifeline for Dad, providing companionship that lifted his spirits and significantly improved his mental wellbeing.
The RNIB also helped Dad maintain his independence in several other small but significant ways. They suggested a press-button talking watch, which became a staple in his daily life. We all have fond memories of the sound of that watch, a reminder of the practical solutions that made a difference.
Additionally, the RNIB offered crucial advice on voting and accessing services, empowering Dad to stay engaged with the world around him even as his sight diminished.
Now, as we lace up our running shoes and prepare to tackle 26.2 miles, we’re asking for your support. Every donation, big or small, will go directly to the RNIB to help them continue their life-changing work with other families like ours.
Please consider sponsoring us as we run in Dad’s memory and in support of the RNIB, so they can continue to provide their invaluable services to those who need them most.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and support.
With love and gratitude,
Laura & Jack
