On 20th January 2024 I will be cycling 55 miles on my spin bike which is the equivalent distance of the london to Brighton bike ride . I will be doing this to raise money for the brother of my daughters friend . Rio is a beautiful brave 2 year old boy who has been diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer that only has a 40-50% chance of long-term survival at diagnosis.

Rio has a large tumour located near to his right kidney and the disease has metastasised to his bone marrow, shoulder, pelvis, lower spine and skeletal frame in his skull. 

Rio is currently undergoing Chemotherapy followed by surgery to remove the tumour which will then be followed by more high dose chemotherapy. Rio will then undergo a stem cell transplant, radiotherapy and immunotherapy .

This is a huge amount for anyone to go through let alone a 2 year old. Even If treatment is successful the neuroblastoma has a very high incidence of relapse where the survival rate drops to just 5-10% !!

Rio’s parents and 8 year old sister are fundraising to get Rio potentially LIFE saving treatment to prevent any relapse . This treatment is not currently available in the UK or on the NHS . It cost in circa of £300,000 and Rio’s family need all the help they can get to raise the funds . For this treatment to be effective Rio will need to go to America immediately after finishing front line treatment in the UK and so Rios family have to have the funds ready for him to start the life saving treatment .

I do a 30 minute spinning session 2- 3 times a week so this ride will definitely be a challenge for me and I know it will be tough but nothing compared to the daily challenges and treatment Rio is enduring.

Rio’s strength and bravery will be my inspiration to keep spinning to hit my 55 mile target.
